Jerusalem—Former National Basketball Association (NBA) star and current Hapoel Jerusalem player Amar’e Stoudemire has teamed with the Inbal Jerusalem Hotel to host a charity event for children in need. During the event, which took place in the lobby of the hotel on Sunday, Oct. 23, various items were sold, including subscriptions to Hapoel Jerusalem basketball games and merchandise signed by Stoudemire.

The Inbal Jerusalem Hotel was chosen to host the event because at this time of year many of its guests are visiting from North America and are very familiar with Stoudemire and his achievements in the NBA.

“All Jerusalem residents hold a special place in their heart for Hapoel Jerusalem and we are very happy to collaborate with the team on such an important event intended to raise money for children in need,” said Rony Timsit, the general manager of the Inbal Jerusalem Hotel. “We’re thrilled at the opportunity to surprise and engage our guests, many of whom come from the United States and are very familiar with Amar’e from his years playing in the NBA.”

Stoudemire began his career on the basketball court at age 14 in 1996 and was the NBA’s 2003 rookie of the year. He played in the NBA for 14 years, including five years with the New York Knicks. Although he retired from the NBA in July of this year, he hasn’t retired from basketball and in August signed a two-year contract with Hapoel Jerusalem, in which he was a minor shareholder before selling his shares and joining as a player. The contract is reportedly for $1.5 million per season. This is the first time a player of Stoudemire’s caliber has played for an Israeli team.

Hapoel Jerusalem Basketball Club is the premier professional basketball club of the City of Jerusalem and competes in the Eurocup, Israel Premier League and the Israel State Cup. Hapoel has won many titles including the ULEB Cup in 2004. In 2015, the team won the Israeli Championship for the first time.

While playing for the Knicks, Stoudemire partnered with United Hatzalah and for every point he scored during the NBA regular season, donations were made to help emergency first response volunteers save lives all over Israel.
