If there was ever any reason to react with outrage and urgent concern regarding the radical left wing of the Democratic Party, there is no better time than now.

At the recently held J Street conference, Sen. Bernie Sanders, a socialist Democrat and presidential candidate, pulled out all the anti-Israel stops he could find. The loser to eventual candidate Hillary Clinton three years ago, Sanders became the latest Democrat to question the U.S. Memorandum of Understanding, which guarantees $3.8 billion in aid to Israel for 10 years.

However, Sanders, himself Jewish, pandered to the lowest rung of anti-Israel America when he took yet another hostile step suggesting that part of the $3.8 billion go to Gaza.

He wasn’t kidding.

With Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from Gaza came the hopes that the Palestinians could take the opportunity to become a productive, peaceful neighbor.

It has become anything but peaceful, instead turning into a Hamas-run launching pad of terrorism. Hamas, meanwhile, has done everything it can to withhold the prospects of peace and a chance to prosper for its people.

Shame on Sanders. That he would be willing to go to such desperate depths by throwing the Jewish state under the bus for votes says more about his character than anything else he could do. But why should we be surprised? This is the same Sanders who was the lone presidential candidate to skip the AIPAC Policy Conference in 2016. He joins Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in overlooking the security of Israel, American’s closest ally in this world.

We’re nine months away from the Democratic National Convention, but we’re already witnessing troubling signs that could very well serve as a threat to Israel.

The senator from Vermont, with the pro-BDS “Squad” and those of a similar ilk on his side, is prepared to do harm to a friend and strengthen those who would see our Holy Land destroyed.

This man and his candidacy are a travesty.
